The events industry has taken one of the hardest hits in the past 18months, with the height of COVID restrictions inviting few alternatives to the allure of a live event, quite simply the options were: Cancel, Postpone or Go Virtual. For many high-profile events, the latter was not an option due to multi-city locations, high numbers of competitors and the absence of fans being a deal breaker. This forced a pause to the industry for many months.

Now, as we begin to emerge through the difficulties of 2020, and are starting to see live events steadily work their way back into our schedules, Rob and the team remain cautiously optimistic of the future of the industry.

“It’s a really interesting time to be part of events, seeing people come together and connect for the first time in many months, it’s a privilege to be a part of it!” – Rob Walley, Controlled Events

Importance of Readiness

As we know, organising big events involves meticulous planning, complex co-ordination, and expert multi-tasking. We need to consider a multitude of circumstances and be prepared for all risks such as:

–      Adverse weather conditions

–      Unwelcome drones

–      Counter terrorism

Whilst supporting the recent Asics London 10k, it was great to see the athletes given the opportunity to practice their art ahead of the big day, to learn the routes, consider their pace and plan for obstacles. The saying ‘Practice makes perfect’ is as true today as when it was first uttered, and that applies beyond the athletes. The on-site teams from traffic control and security to refreshments and media, all took the time to practice their roles; planning and preparing for potential scenarios, running drills etc. all of which made those involved more efficient and perfect on the day.

“It was a pleasure working with Controlled Events on the delivery of the ASICS London 10K and appreciated the support and expertise offered in the lead up to the event, as well as on the day. We look forward to continuing to work with them in the coming months on our upcoming events.” – Emily Whitaker, Event Manager
